Unicycle Loves You to Release Their Sophomore Effort, Mirror, Mirror

Free MP3 of their first single, title track Mirror, Mirror,”

“ULY sounds like a mix-tape of indie rock’s best eras, from reverb-drenched Cure guitar lines to New Pornographers-esque boy-girl harmonies.”

-SPIN

“They’re a band with a vision…you start thinking to yourself, ‘Wow– do these guys already have enough hooks to last a whole album?’ unaware of just how right you are.”

 -Pitchfork

Two years after their debut release, Unicycle Loves You are back with their next pop experiment, Mirror, Mirror. The album sees this former quintet stripped down to its core trio and removed from the glossy studio setting. Jim Carroll, whose solo home-recordings inspired the band’s initial formation, took on the roles of songwriter, recording engineer and producer in order to orchestrate a truly hand-crafted record.
Heavily influenced by cult horror films and science fiction, Mirror, Mirror manages to retain the playful energy the band is known for while pulling the listener into some darker territory. From the moments of the introduction, the sound of scraping metal and a ghostly chorus hint at the mischievous world that hides behind the looking glass. Things are never quite as they seem, however, and in an instant, the band plunges into “Quagga” glistening pop tune lead by bassist Nicole Vitale, who takes the reins on several tracks, including the single and title track “Mirror, Mirror” this time around.
The twists and turns of Mirror, Mirror continue along like a heartbeat and sprints off in a frenzy as the tone of each track shifts. The gallop of “Justine” races into the fever of “Mountain Lungs” and then slinks down into the summertime haziness of the title track. Carroll adds additional percussion and fluttering keys to further embellish upon each of these distinctive tunes, which results in a lush and haunting adventure.
Unicycle Loves You have shared the stage with acts such as The Raveonettes, Fiery Furnaces, Art Brut, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Generationals, Crystal Antlers, Bishop Allen and Ha Ha Tonka, and have been featured in publications such as SPIN, Filter, Venus Zine, URB, USA Today and Sentimentalist Magazine.
The 14 track Mirror, Mirror will be available September 7, 2010 on Highwheel Records. Enjoy the title track, “Mirror, Mirror”
