They say a secret is a secret only if nobody else but you know about it. For the past two years, Mike Ross (Patrick J Adams), his boss Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and his forever loyal assistant Donna (Sarah Rafferty) have tried to keep the fact that Mike never went to law school a secret from the rest of the world. The truth came out when Managing Partner, Jessica “She-Who-Still-Has-Her-Name-On-The-Door” Pearson (Gina Torres) found out and has been holding Mike to ransom ever since. Tired of all the lies that have been keeping him from having an honest relationship with paralegal Rachel (Meghan Markle), Mike finally spilled the beans to her himself, but at what cost?
The season three opener does not miss a beat, picking up days after where season 2 left off.
Despite the successful overthrow of Daniel Hardman and the merger with Edward Darby (Conleth Hill) now complete, the war within the hallowed walls of newly-formed Pearson Darby is not over. Harvey is not happy with Jessica or the merger with Darby, and even less happy with Mike for his role in it. Louis (Rick Hoffman) is disgruntled by the merger, too, and it has less to do with his voting rights in the firm than the fact the new quartermaster has replaced decent pens with Uniballs and dispensed with his favorite raspberry bran bars. Thus begins Mike’s desperate attempts to win back Harvey’s trust (“what is Batman without his Robin?”) while Harvey declares war on Jessica.
Darby has his own agenda, assigning a seemingly-unwinnable case to Harvey involving Ava Hessington (Michelle Fairley), a woman with close ties to Darby who owns an oil company and is now being investigated for breaking environmental laws and bribery by a US Attorney with aspirations for political office. Waging war on multiple fronts is not easy and Harvey is reminded that he can’t win everything on his own.
Inspired by the Game of Thrones, it appears that Suits season 3 will have just as many more stories of love, betrayal, manipulation, battles for power and expressions of loyalty to come. As always, there are some great comical moments, particularly between Donna and Louis (I dare you to not laugh out loud at the mention of Uniballs from now on), the latter surprisingly becoming more of an ally to Mike since the departure of Hardman.
SUITS returns for season 3 on USA Network on Tuesday July 16 at 10/9c.
Guest stars: Abigail Spencer, Gary Cole, Conleth Hill, Michelle Fairley, Adam Godley
