This is CW’s shot at a period piece based loosely on Mary, Queen of Scots. There’s fancy costumes, a magnificent estate and beautiful young people. Everything looked so clean between the wardrobe, the sets and the perfect hair, that it doesn’t quite feel authentic whatsoever. And just when I found myself somewhat getting into the show, they would blast music that didn’t quite sound the period, or they would have a montage of makeup application. This show would benefit if it stopped half-assing the period elements, and committed to an actual gritty costumed drama. There’s times I thought it wasn’t half bad with its backstabbing and political intrigue. However, there’s far too many female characters all introduced at one time, and I couldn’t tell them apart. I wanted them to wear name tags. And I was surprised to see a character named Nostradamus. Now he didn’t look like anyone we would think of when we hear the name Nostradamus. He’s a relatively young guy with some well trimmed facial hair. Not entirely bad, but nowhere near being Game of Thrones. This one is going to be hit or miss with the typical CW target demographic. Watch the series premiere of Reign on Thursday, October 17 at 9/8c on The CW.
