GOTHAM “Pilot” Advance Review

Cr: Jessica Miglio/FOXFOX will chase away your Monday night blues with the series premiere of Gotham and the season premiere of Sleepy Hollow. How can you go wrong with that combo? You just can’t. I’ve been looking forward to Gotham since the cast was announced. They had me at Donal Logue (Terriers), Ben McKenzie (Southland), and David Mazouz (Touch)—three of the very best actors from several amazing shows that were taken from us way too soon. I’m happy to say that Gotham does not disappoint. The series focuses on the mythology of the characters and I found that aspect fascinating. You get to see where these characters came from and what makes them tick. Gotham is all about origins and that is a beautiful thing. No need to shy away from the series if you are not versed in Batman because pretensions are left at the door. It really is a show that everyone can enjoy.

Cr: Jessica Miglio/FOXThe beginning moments of the pilot set the stage for what’s to come. Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) parents are murdered and Detective James Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie) promise will allow him to experience things on a whole new level. Welcome to the mystifying world of Gotham. David shines as Bruce Wayne. I loved his work opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Touch. He is talented beyond his years. Sean Pertwee plays Alfred Pennyworth. Alfred has moxie.

Gotham_pilot_RiverFrontPier_1817_hires1Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) and Detective James Gordon are new partners and someone isn’t too thrilled about that. Harvey makes the show fun. He’s the Tig (Kim Coates) of Gotham. He certainly keeps things interesting and isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty. He’s only ashamed of one thing. I adore the pairing of Donal and Ben. They compliment each other perfectly.

Some of the best scenes in the episode are when Bullock and Gordon interact with Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith). Fish is hilariously wicked. Jada comes close to stealing the show. “Bless your heart.”

Gotham_pilot_FishMooney_s_3845_hires1Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Taylor) enjoys his work a little too much but he’s not apologizing for it. They could not have picked a better person to bring The Penguin to life. There is something about Robin that is just so fascinating.

The episode shows you that Gotham is full of corruption, beauty, redemption, challenges, betrayal, loyalty, and everything in between. You will see both sides of the coin so choose a side, if you can, and let the games begin. It’s a visually stunning series. I really can’t say anything negative about it. The soundtrack is even perfect. The sights and sounds of this series will keep you coming back for more. I have to agree with the guy in the pilot that isn’t having the best day, “Fun!” Even he can see past his horrible day and realize what he’s a part of. They should have that guy on the posters with his thumbs-ups. This series will make your day “fun” despite what’s going on around you. I love this series and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
